From the President…..

It’s just a few more days until our September show. It looks like we have a good field, it was hard to plan, not having the show held over a holiday weekend before. With any luck the weather will continue to be as beautiful as it’s been recently. Hopefully you’ve picked out your raffle donations and have them ready to take with you. Debbie Sherwood has worked hard planning our after-show tailgate, and we hope all our members in attendance will make a contribution to the “picnic” and send our guests off with a good meal and happy memories.

Then it’s time for our September meeting, on Wednesday the 8th. Goodness we’re busy. At this meeting the Board will select the nominating committee for 2005. If you have an interest in running for the Board next year, please let me know and I’ll be sure the nominating committee knows of your interest. It’s not a huge time commitment, and it’s for our red dogs, so please consider how you might want to participate.

At our last meeting, we talked about our shows, and the budgets for our shows, and rescue, and funding for rescue, and it was pretty obvious that we should have good controls on all the events in which we participate. So we’re going to have these on the agenda, and have a discussion about what we know works or doesn’t work, new ideas, and generally how to have guidelines to help everyone in the club, particularly those who’ve agreed to take on specific responsibilities, so that everyone understands what is being done, and what can be expected. As always, your thoughts and ideas are welcome, and we hope you’ll participate at this meeting.

Then before you know it, we’ll be into holiday time. Be thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas, if you want a club celebration and, if so, what kind? And where? And when, considering busy weekends with your Irish Setter.

So that sums it up for now. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the show on the 4th.

Susan

FDA Talk Paper
September 3, 2004

Media Inquiries: 301-827-6242 Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA

Fort Dodge to Comply with FDA's Request to Recall ProHeart 6 Injectable Heartworm Product from the Market Due to Serious Health Concerns

Fort Dodge Animal Health, of Overland Park, Kansas, at FDA's request, has agreed to immediately cease production and recall its heartworm medication ProHeartÆ6 from the market until the FDA's concerns about adverse reaction reports associated with the product can be resolved. FDA is requesting that the firm continue to conduct research to determine the cause of related adverse reactions and develop a strategy to help prevent such problems in the future before the product is marketed again. The FDA will convene an
independent scientific advisory committee to thoroughly evaluate all available data.

ProHeart6 is an approved injectable sustained-release heartworm prevention product for dogs. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition of dogs, cats, and other species of mammals. The parasite that causes heartworm disease is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito.

FDA is also advising veterinarians to avoid administering this product to dogs until further notice. Pet owners should consult their veterinarians regarding their pet's health care needs.

Since the product was approved in June 2001, Fort Dodge Animal Health has cooperated with FDA to investigate numerous adverse event reports. As a result, Fort Dodge has voluntarily changed the label
to include post approval safety information including rare reports of death and a caution to practitioners that dogs should have a negative test for heartworm before administration.

Despite these label changes, FDA is still receiving unexplained adverse event reports, some of them severe. FDA's concern is based on voluntary self-reporting to FDA by veterinarians and owners whose
dogs have suffered adverse drug experiences (ADEs) to ProHeart6 (which contains the drug moxidectin) as well as the mandatory reporting of adverse events by Fort Dodge Animal Health.

Fort Dodge Animal Health has agreed to recall any product that has already been distributed to veterinarians.

As of August 4, 2004, FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) had received 5,552 adverse event reports for ProHeartÆ6. The actual number of adverse events is likely even higher because studies show
that only a fraction of actual ADEs are reported.

The Agency has observed an increase in the number of cases associated with liver and bleeding abnormalities followed in some cases by death.

Irish Setter Club of San Diego

Minutes of Board of Directors Meeting - April 14, 2004

In attendance were: Susan Bender, Cathy Dever, Myrna Burleigh, Alexis Mathy, Pam Allen, Teresa Velasquez, and Madelon McGowan. Also in attendance were Sue Mertens, Kathy Whiteis, Hazel Allen, Linda Kenan, Valerie Wheeler, and Ron Larmour.

The minutes of the February meeting were approved. There was no Board meeting in March. There were no reports from the President or Vice President. Secretary had paperwork for the next show, in February 2005, which was given to the President. The Treasurer was not in attendance, and there was no financial report for the meeting. There were no other reports from Board members.

Committee reports were to be presented at the General Meeting. There were some updates to the membership list presented.

Old Business – Linda Kenan presented information about fundraising opportunities with Petco Park. Representatives from Petco are to get back to Linda regarding kiosk opportunities but to date she has not heard from him. As another thought, the club could do holiday photos with Santa for fundraising. The best time to do that would be October, so people would have plenty of time to plan their photos. It would need to be advertised, and would be open to anyone who wanted to purchase a photo.

New Business – there was none presented.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:00 pm

Irish Setter Club of San Diego

Minutes of the General Meeting – April 14, 2004

The meeting was called to order at 7 pm. In attendance were Susan Bender, Cathy Dever, Myrna Burleigh, Alexis Mathy, Pam Allen, Teresa Velasquez, Madelon McGowan, Sue Mertens, Kathy Whiteis, Hazel Allen, Linda Kenan, Valerie Wheeler and Ron Larmour.

Minutes of the February 2004 and March 2004 meetings were read and approved. There was no other input from Board members.

Membership – the application of Jane and Ann Fransioli was read for the second time, and the application and check turned over to the Secretary. They were read the first time at the March meeting, but neither the Secretary or Treasurer were there to take the check. After discussion, their membership application was accepted. Also regarding membership, Aileen Frazier had been contacted by Carol Horner, who stated she had not been receiving the newsletter. Aileen advised we had no record of her as a member during 2003 and 2004. Aileen referred the emails to Susan, who wrote Carol indicating that we had no record of her paying dues, and referred to her email wherein she resigned. She was also told she could reapply for membership, since we have no policy for reinstatement of membership. To date we have not received a response.

Teresa Velasquez reported that Ed and Jeannie Kaatz have an interest in adopting Caitlyn. They have some family events coming up and will wait a while, but Teresa will continue to be in touch with them concerning Caitlyn. Colin is not doing well, having many medical problems. Kathy Whiteis reported that Judy Lucas was going to the Star Wars convention, and again offering photos of Sizzle for sale.

Old Business – Teresa needs reservations, meal selections and checks for the May awards dinner.

New Business – none.

Shows. We discussed confirmed judges for September. Patti Long Smith confirmed February 2005, Laura Edwards-Johnson confirmed February 2006. Ann Rogers Clark has not committed, and it is unlikely she would be available for any of our shows. We still need to work on September 2005. We need to confirm Sweeps judges for the next few upcoming shows. We also need a show chairman for September 2004. We will confirm that Debbie is working on trophies for September 2004.

There was a discussion about the Cabrillo Del Sur showgrounds, there are new problems with the city of San Diego.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Susan Bender, President

DOG COOKIE AND TREAT RECIPES –

Thanks to Pat Boldt for sharing!

Anyway, although I am an awful cook for humans-I've come up with some great recipes for the dogs.

By the way-I use no or minimal wheat in all the recipes.

Salmon treats:

2 cans of pink salmon (Big Lots or 99 cent store)

soy or rice flour-2 cups

rolled oats-2 cups

2 eggs

Garlic powder

Mix salmon and all other ingredients in bowl-add flour and oats as needed to make it "thick". I start with above ingredients and modify as needed. I then take a thin baking dish-you want it only about 1/2 inch thick to 3/4 inch thick max. I use a plastic bag over my hand to spread it in baking dish.

Bake at 320 degrees for about 20-30 minutes-until it looks golden on top. Let cool. cut in tiny squares and then I dehydrate mine so that the are hard and keep for several weeks-otherwise you will need to use quickly (not a problem!) and refrigerate!

Gourmet Gizzards

Chicken gizzards

flaxseeds

garlic powder

Put small amount of oil in frying pan, cut chicken gizzards into small

pieces,sautee-add flaxseeds and garlic powder and small amount of water to let them

simmer. Top over their dinner and they'll love you! Can also dehydrate!

To die for treats!

NOTE: Disgusting to make!

2 cans Solid Gold Green Tripe

rolled oats-2 cups

soy flour-2 cups

flaxseeds

garlic powder

eggs 2-3

Might need a little regular flour (1/4 cup)to hold it together. Sometimes I need it -sometimes I don't

Mix all ingredients in bowl-make it a "thick" batter-if runny, add more oats and soy flour.

Smells and looks disgusting-dogs LOVE it.

Bake at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes. These can also be dehydrated for longer use.

Careful-with your fingers serving these! LOL Hope you all enjoy! Let me know what your dogs think!

Pets Online! (excerpted)
Web sites for animal lovers
by Jenny Factor

Over the years, my son's passion for bringing home furry, scaly, and wooly friends has led me to learn something about caring for rabbits, cats, dogs, goldfish, frogs, parrots—even earthworms! I don't know where I'd be if it weren't for the Web—where I find great discounts on pet equipment and lots of useful, time- and pet-saving information—whether I need to tend to a sick kitten at 3 a.m. or set the right water temperature for some new tetra fish.

Adorable Link:
Are you ready to get inspired by an online cutie? The animal lovers in my office at EarthLink check out
Pet of the Day http://www.petoftheday.com every morning.

Pick Out the Perfect Pet
Adding a new pet to your family—whatever the pet's size—can be an important, life-altering decision. So it helps to learn as much as possible before you bring a new animal into your home.

For a fascinating rundown on raising everything from dogs and cats to spiders and howler monkeys, visit
BellaOnline's Pets and Exotic Pets Lifestyle http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art4109.asp page. If you're a mom, dad, or caretaker for children, narrow in on family-friendly choices—bird, rodent, cat, or dog—with iParenting's family pet descriptions. http://www.ivillage.co.uk/parenting/pracad/pets/articles/0,,634260_634265-2,00.html

If you've got a particular animal already in mind, The PetCenter Web Site http://www.thepetcenter.com/gen/choose.html has a list of careful questions to consider before you say, "I'll take that one."

After that, timing is everything. Take this short quiz to find out: Is This the Best Time to Adopt a Pet? http://www.ddfl.org/behavior/besttime.htm

For those of you who want to take in an abandoned animal, don't miss out on the wonderful database of adoptable pets at http://www.Petfinder.com. Also, find out whether your local animal shelter has a Web site. The humane society in my neighborhood adds new photos to their Web site every night at 7 p.m. so you can look for new pets—or find your lost pet.

If you prefer to bring home a purebred cat or dog, find the perfect breed for your lifestyle with one of these online questionnaires:

Select A Pet Quiz: Dog Breeds http://www.petnet.com.au/selectapet/dogselectapet2.html

Select A Pet Quiz: Cat Breeds http://www.petnet.com.au/selectapet/catselectapet.html

To avoid winding up with a sick or smuggled pet, be certain to buy your dog or cat from a reliable breeder. Dog lovers can get breeder referrals from AmericanKennelClub.com.

Find a Lost Pet
If your cat or dog runs away or gets lost, scour the neighborhood, and call the local shelters. But also log on to the Web.
LostandFoundNow.com and the USDA Animal Care Office's MissingPet.net have regularly uploaded online listings of missing and discovered animals, sorted by U.S. state. If you know your local shelters' Web address, check there too! (You'll find info on local humane society Web sites in the "Pick out the Perfect Pet" section above.) Many humane societies post photographs and descriptions of their newly found animals daily, so you can stay close to home and check the shelters online, while other family members drive around the neighborhood.

For a to-do list of other ideas to help find your lost pet, visit PetRescue.com. For dog-specific tips, try PawRescue. And with nocturnal animals like iguanas or cats, it's important to look around the neighborhood and under bushes both at sunrise and sundown, when nocturnal animals tend to be more hungry and active. Use this helpful online form to print out a Lost Pet Poster. And always keep updated photos of your pets on hand.

The first time my pet got lost, the Web sites I visited convinced me to learn more about microchips http://www.petplace.com. These tiny and very popular devices, now provided for a nominal cost by most vets and shelters, can help animal shelters everywhere find you if your pet turns up without a collar, or rips their collar off when running away. Your vet will tell you how, but you can annually review your own contact info in the three U.S. microchip databases online.

Your Pet's Health
Most animals hate going to the vet—and even a simple wellness visit can be expensive—so I'm glad for all the health-related pet advice I can get.

All the largest pet Web sites have detailed health and care info.
The Pet Place http://www.petplace.com/Default.asp is a treasure trove of information, with 1,900 searchable medical articles, clearly organized and frequently updated. It's also a good place to go to learn how to choose healthy pets, clean up after pets, and enjoy your pets more—a site you'll definitely want to bookmark. Yahoo! Pets http://pets.yahoo.com/pets also has nice info on training and keeping dogs, cats, and other animals. Combined with message boards, lost-and-found links, special animal Web sites, and more, it's another great resource for new pet owners.

AllCreaturesCare.com http://www.2ndchance.info/ACC.htm has excellent information for many different kinds of animals—from horses to dogs. Search for local vets and get online answers to frequently asked questions from TalkToTheVet.com http://www.talktothevet.com We all hope our animals will live long, healthy, happy lives. But in times of loss, you may appreciate a Web community of online pet lovers. PetLoss.com http://www.petloss.com and other pet bereavement and memorial sites can offer special sympathy.

The Dogs Hold an Election

-- Told by Lame Deer at Winner, Rosebud Indian Reservation, South Dakota, 1969
Recorded by Richard Erdoes. From American Indian Myths and Legends.

We don't think much of the white man's elections. Whoever wins, we Indians always lose. Well, we have a little story about elections.

Once a long time ago, the dogs were trying to elect a president. So one of them got up in the big dog convention and said: "I nominate the bulldog for president. He's strong. He can fight."
"But he can't run," said another dog. "What good is a fighter who can't run? He won't catch anybody."
Then another dog got up and said: "I nominate the greyhound, because he sure can run."
But the other dogs cried: "Naw, he can run all right, but he can't fight. When he catches up with somebody, what happens then? He gets the hell beaten out of him, that's what! So all he's good for is running away."
Than an ugly little mutt jumped up and said: "I nominate that dog for president who smells good under his tail." And immediately an equally ugly mutt jumped up and yelled: "I second the motion."
At once all the dogs started sniffing underneath each other's tails.
A big chorus went up:
"Phew, he doesn't smell good under his tail."
"No, neither does this one."
"He's no presidential timber!"
"No, he's no good, either."
"This one sure isn't the people's choice."
"Wow, this ain't my candidate!"
When you go out for a walk, just watch the dogs. They're still sniffing underneath each other's tails. They're looking for a good leader, and they still haven't found him.

I am THRILLED to announce that my sweet boy, Clancy, finished his championship on Saturday in Santa Barbara with three total majors, including two back-to-backs this weekend - a three point on Friday under Ricardo Saldana and a four point the next day under Dorothy McDonald. He¹s my first show dog and first champion, and while I¹m happy to say I put 11 points, including the first major, on him myself, I want to thank Loran Morgan for making him look so good this weekend.

He¹s a rollicking red spirit, just what the standard calls for, and a ³balanced² dog, in that he has a title on both ends, having earned his CD nearly two years ago.

Congratulations, Clancy, Ch. WindRose Rollickin¹ Red Spirit, CD! I¹m so proud of you!!

To build a SETTER you need...

Ingredients:

Fur, LOTS of fur

1 big bark (with an owner operated on/off switch always left on)

1 very loving soul

1 happily wagging tail

1 pair of BIG ears (not for listening of course)

1 pair dancing, devilish eyes

1 pair prancing feet

STIR IN GRADUALLY

The hearing of a deer

Unbound Setter energy

the famous Setter grin

A sense of humor (both owner and dog)

A dose of the sillies

A coiled spring, preferably 4 a long wet nose to nuzzle your face in the morning

A dash of mischief (make that a CUP)

A cute twinkle in the eye

A wooounderooful singing voice

True forgiveness

Beauty in motion

A fuzzy belly button

That keen eyesight that allows Setters to see small, furry, moving objects up to 1/4 mile away

Another BIG dose of mischief

A dash of drollery

A very intelligent and creative brain (JUST KIDDING!!!)

A QAX (quizzical attitude excellent)

An 'innocent halo' (for use when the Setter is doing something it shouldn't and gets caught)

A sense of undying loyalty

A keen, intelligent mind

An unwavering eagerness to please

And finally, a use for all the discarded parts - build a SQUIRREL for it to chase!
