From the President.....

It's May. Springtime and Mother's Day. And these last few days we've had record-breaking heat ... I hope this isn't what the summer will be about.

Not a lot to report this time. Our club's Awards Dinner was scheduled for May 22, but was cancelled when we had such a small response from members. Since the Cabrillo-Del Sur Shows have been cancelled, our Awards Dinner has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 15. We will hold this event at Jamacha Junction, 777 Jamacha Rd, El Cajon, CA (location is next to Harvest Ranch Market across the street from Outback.) Further information is contained elsewhere in this issue. Those of us who don't show our dogs probably don't realize the importance of these awards, owners work hard all year in all aspects of the dog works ... conformation, obedience, agility ... and it's good to acknowledge their efforts and achievements.

We don't have anything else on the horizon for summer. Although a few options were discussed, there didn't seem to be a lot of passion for anything so as of now there are no plans in the works. Perhaps it will just be a long, lazy summer.

On a sad note, we've lost one of our rescue dogs. Colin came to us just a couple months ago, we were told he was found in the ocean off the Mexican coast. He settled in with Pam and Hazel, Rory and Caitlyn, but just wasn't strong enough to continue. He had major health problems which couldn't be ignored. The happy note to his story is that he was not alone, he was cared for and loved at the end, which is what all our wonderful red dogs deserve. Thanks to Pam and Hazel for opening their home to our rescues and caring so well for them.

My girl Shena is here with me now, hoping this won't take too long and that we'll be going for our morning walk very soon. No matter how tired she might seem, just hearing "w...a...l...k" gets her up and tearing for the door. Sure keeps me going!

Hug your reddogs.

Susan

May the shamrocks fall softly...

April brings sadness to two of our setter families. Madelon McGowan has tragically lost her beloved "Killy" (Kilarney) and Pam and Hazel Allen had to say goodbye to their most recent rescue, Colin. Pam sent me the following piece which I have included. It was sent to her by a friend and had meaning for her, and I think for all of us.

Sunshine's Yesterday's Promise

January 4, 2002 - April 4, 2004

"A joy each day of his life"

"Colin Allen"

Februay 14, 1993 - April 18, 2004

"A handsome white-faced Irish Setter rescue who lived with us for 2 months. We loved you like our very own."

To paraphrase Pam, look into the skies tonight and look for Colin and Killy's stars, and remember all those wonderful dogs who have touched our lives who are waiting for us.

I AM YOUR DOG

I am your dog, and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often never noticing the truly grand things in life.

Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle. You smile at me; I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a simple moment of your time? That is all I ask.

To slow down, if even for a few minutes to be with me. So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of others of my kind, passing.

Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly, sometimes so suddenly it wrenches your heart out of your throat. Sometimes, we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at you with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep, to run free in a distant land.

I may not be here tomorrow; I may not be here next week. Some day you will shed the water from your eyes, that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just "One more day" with me. Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have NOW, together. So come, sit down here next to me on the floor, and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as "alpha" or as "trainer" or even "Mom or Dad," come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look deep into one another's eyes, and talk.

I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even life in general. You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with. Someone very different from you, and here I am. I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think of you as a "Dog on two feet" -- I know what you are. You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now, come sit with me, on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes, and whisper to my ears. Speak with your heart, with your joy and I will know your true self.

We may not have tomorrow, and life is oh so very short.

Irish Setter Club of Southern California Fun Field Day

April 10, 2004

Well, you are probably wondering WHY I'm writing about a fun field day activity for another club...why, because several ISCSD members are also members of ISCSC and attended this event! Those present included myself and Jenna, Alexis Mathy and Josie, Sue Mertens with Diva and Fire, Cathy Dever and Bailey, and John and Helena Landers with Shemus and Sherlock.

Jenna on the chain gang!

There was a great turn out - about 18 or so dogs. Most of the dogs were show dogs, though there were also former rescue dogs with their owners and just club members. The trainer was Bill O'Brien who is a professional trainer located in the Lakewood area. The activities of the day included a talk on introducing the dogs to birds with a view toward obtaining a Junior Hunter title, what equipment is needed, what obedience training is necessary and then introducing the dogs to the birds. Bill brought pigeons and a few quail - apparently the quail were not readily available this time of year; I don't remember the exact reason, I think because of some of the avian diseases present recently. The event was held at the Prado Dam recreation area which is located in the same area where the Lake Mathews Kennel Club holds its show.

The dog training area is comprised of a number of acres and ponds where field trials and hunt tests are held on a regular basis. There is a boarding kennel here as well. The entire area is fenced except for the front gates.

The dogs were secured on the "chain gang" - this technique is used at hunt tests and field trials when the dogs are waiting their turn to run. They quickly learned to respect this tool! Bill then let the dogs see the pigeons, bringing the bird down the line and letting each dog obtain the scent. It was truly inspiring to watch this instinct come to life in our dogs! The dogs were then loosed -- all together!! -- when the bird was released. This was an amazing and awe-inspiring sight. Picture 18 Irish Setters surging in a red wave after the bird in flight! (Well...Sue, maybe you were not as awed by this activity. The pigeon decided it would fly back to the trees and land on Sue's new SUV, and to her absolute horror these same 18 Irish were all attempting to get to the bird on the top of her vehicle the best way they could! It was not a pretty sight.) Following this, Bill worked individually with each dog

Josie, Helena and (I think) Shemus

Josie and her bird!

skillfully allowing the dogs to quarter and scent a planted bird. After the dog located the bird and either held a point or flash-pointed, the bird was flushed and the dog was allowed to give chase as a training technique at this point. It was tremendous fun - I don't know of any San Diego areas where we might be able to hold this type of event - but in writing this, I'm hoping that if someone does, they can let the board know. The experience of watching the latent hunting instinct to surface in our wonderful red dogs is amazing - and they are so happy and excited in the discovery of what they were bred to do!

From the Bookshelf.....

The book reviewed below has been very favorably discussed recently -

THE DOG LISTENER....Jan Fennell

Book Description

Jan Fennell's remarkable gifts have earned her the nickname "the dog whisperer." Her unique knowledge of the canine world and its instinctive language has enabled her to bring even the most desperate and troubled dogs to heel. This easy-to-follow guide to Jan's simple techniques draws on her countless case histories of problem dogs -- from biters and barkers to bicycle chasers -- to show how we can bridge the language barrier that separates man from his best friend.

The Dog Listener is a moving and inspiring story. Jan tells of the tragic death that first led her to reassess conventional attitudes toward dogs. She describes how she grew determined to find a more compassionate alternative to standard "obedience" training techniques. Most important of all, she brings the reader to an understanding of her method, one made all the more remarkable by its simplicity. Her book will fascinate animal lovers and prove indispensable to dog owners.

About the Author

Jan Fennell's lifelong affair with dogs began during her childhood in London and blossomed when she became a successful breeder, winning prizes at major shows, including Cruft's. In recent years, her remarkable work with delinquent dogs and her frequent contributions to television programs have won her a wide and admiring audience. Jan; her partner, Glenn Miller; and their pack of show-winning Graftonbury English springer spaniels live in rural North Lincolnshire, England.

excerpting from Publishers Weekly review....

Standard dog training has long advocated the use of force choke collars, sharp smacks, harsh language. Fennell, a dog trainer in England for 30 years, wants to change all that. Expanding upon the theories of horse trainer Monty Roberts (the basis for The Horse Whisperer), Fennell believes one can best train dogs by emulating natural behaviors, that is, by treating them as they would treat each other in the wild. Her intelligent, straightforward and humane method has engendered controversy and increasing enthusiasm. After Fennel's dog Purdey went manic, injured Fennell's young children and had to be euthanized, she was fearful of owning a dog again. Lured back into it by the pleasure of showing spaniels, she adopted a high-strung young shepherd, Sasha, and investigated alternative training methods. Fennell's simple and succinct method posits that domesticated dogs are confused, believing themselves to be the pack leaders, and humans their subordinates. Fennell retrains dogs to accept a human as their alpha leader. She spurns the use of force, even in training language, employing instead a system of Pavlovian rewards. Those wanting true canine companionship will find Fennell's commonsense approach attractive and easy to apply with puppies as well as with older dogs. She addresses common problems, from separation anxiety to barking at guests to the mistrust of strangers that rescued dogs often harbor. Her knowledge and love of dogs is expansive and her concern for their well-being balances kindness and appropriate discipline. (Aug.)
