From the President.....

St. Pat was looking out for us this year. What a great event. It started out with an overcast sky and cool weather. By step-off time, the sun was out but there was a light breeze which kept all of us nice and comfortable. It seems to me this parade gets bigger every year. Used to be we were right in front, now we have to wait for the endless number of politicians and schools bands. But the dogs were very patient (except for mine, of course, who wanted to just keep hunting squirrels in the park). And as always, the crowd loved the dogs. After a cool down period, we went back to the gardens, where we had a terrific pot-luck lunch and our general meeting. Everyone agreed it was a happy, fun day.

Coming events ... we have our meeting in April, the second Wednesday which is the 14th. Then in May, we will have our awards dinner on Saturday the 22nd. So our general meeting will also be held on the 22nd, and not the second Wednesday as is usual. It will be held at the Town & Country Hotel, and there is additional information about the dinner in the newsletter. Get your reservation in early. By the time this newsletter is out the deadline for awards applications has past, so I hope you got all your paperwork in.

As most of you have heard, our club lost a favorite and long-time member recently. Skip Scott passed away in March. Our condolences to Barb, we've let her know that she is in our thoughts and prayers. Our September show will be dedicated to Skip's memory.

We don't have any other specific plans for events later in the year. But that can change as ideas are brought forth, so if you have any thoughts please let us know.

Not much else to discuss. Looks like spring is here. We had some great rains, but boy did they bring down the ash from the hills ... our golf course turned absolutely black.

Take care. Hugs your reddogs. See you soon.

Susan

Minutes of General Meeting

Saturday, March 13, 2004

In attendance were: Susan Bender; Cathy Dever; Pam Allen; Hazel Allen; Debbie Sherwood; Linda Kenan; Aileen Frazier; Jaime Velasquez; Teresa Velasquez; Madelon McGowan; and Valerie Wheeler.

There were no reports from Board members. A membership application was read from Jane and Anne Fransioli. The paperwork and check will be submitted to the membership chairmen or treasurer at the April meeting. Madelon McGowan submitted a report from her attendance at the Allied Gardens Rec Center meeting on March 1. Teresa Velasquez reported regarding the awards dinner this year on May 22. It was decided we will book the Town & Country Hotel, and the meal will be choice of a steak or vegetarian dinner.

A discussion was held regarding regular membership meetings, whether the timing should be included with "event" days, or whether we should restrict meetings to the second Wednesday of each month, regardless of other functions during the month. It was decided that club business should be left to the discretion of the Board as to whether the regularly scheduled Board meeting is changed. General membership meetings, at which business is not conducted, can be held in conjunction with club functions, as long as proper notice is given to members.

Another discussion was held concerning a letter sent to the Board regarding interaction with judges during club shows. As in the past, judges will be contacted prior to each show, asking what their requirements/wishes might be (in addition to hotel requirements). Volunteers will be recruited for various aspects of judges' hospitality, providing no one who is showing has interaction with any judge prior to the show (interaction after the show is complete is not an issue). The number of volunteers we have will determine what specific interaction we have with each sweeps, breed, and obedience judge.

La Mesa had requested participation by ISCSD in its Flag Day parade, but scheduling of this parade conflicts with the ICSA national show.

Pam Allen suggested that our September 2004 show be dedicated in memory of Skip Scott.

There being no further topics to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.

Submitted by Susan Bender, President of ISCSD

PLEASE!!! REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR ANNUAL AWARDS PLAQUES WHICH NEED TO BE RE-ENGRAVED OR PERPETUAL TROPHIES WHICH ARE TO BE ENGRAVED AND RE-PRESENTED TO THE AWARDS CHAIR AT THE APRIL 14th CLUB MEETING!! THANK YOU!!

...and from our very own Martha Stewart, Pam Allen (very big grin!)

If you guys have microwave ovens :-) and if you feed your redheaded kids eggs. We have found an easier way to cook them (and they are cooked oil free too)--so it is a very healthy way of cooking them and less electricity too. Hehehehe

Okay here it goes:

1. Break the egg and put in a 1 cup pyrex measuring cup (discard egg shell) :-) Beat the egg real well with a fork

2. Cook egg on 40% power for 1 minute. At about the 15 minute mark take cup out and beat / fluff egg, put back in and cook for the remaining minutes. ( This is if you all have the newer models, if not, take a look in your instruction booklet for your model.)

I cook 1 egg this way every morning and divide into thirds for the guys here and mix it in with their morning kibble along with some yogurt and a small dab of their canned food. Don't cook the eggs any longer then mentioned or they will become tough (overcooked).

Happy cooking,

Pam, Hazel and the redheads (Rory, Caitlyn and Colin)

May the shamrocks fall softly.........

Perry C Scott III....Skip

March brought a deeply saddening loss both to long time club member and Treasurer, Barbara Scott, our club, and the local dog community, when Barbara's husband Skip crossed the bridge to a better life, losing a long battle with his illness. And we all are the poorer for it.

I remember when Skip and Barb first became engaged - I was pretty new to the club then - it seems not all that long ago! Skip sort of "married" into dogs and embraced Barbara's passion for English Cockers and Irish Setters with his whole heart. Pretty amazing when you consider Skip came from a non-doggie background. There are so many memories. Skip became a good friend and an indispensable member of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of San Diego and the ISCSD. He will be very much missed.

Several club members share these remembrances~

Madelon McGowan recalls, "Whenever I saw Skip I would smile. He had that effect on people. Here, I'd think, is a guy whose dry wit will brighten everyone's day. He always knew the "right" thing to say -- a brief remark which took away pain, or anger or "the blahs." He was one of those rare mensches, a genuine human being who related to his fellow travelers on the planet with compassion and patience, graciousness and warmth." Madelon writes, "I will always treasure his words, his gift to me just before Christmas one year. My puppy of only four months had died suddenly, leaving me in a dark, lonely place. Skip knew about such places - he'd been to them. His words were few, but they brought the comfort I sorely needed:

"If he only had a few months to live, wasn't he

lucky that they were spent with you?"

I'll never forget that moment, or the man who made it happen. Now, feeling his loss, I recall his words, but in a slightly altered way:

"Since Skip was given a relatively short time to live,

weren't we lucky that he spent part of it with us?"

Carolyn Sisson says, "There are many very special memories of Skip and his many hours given to both the ISCSD and the ECSCSD. He was always there by Barbara's side until his health made this impossible. I have a special connection with Skip through a little black dog named "Ace". He was Skip's pride and joy. He even took him to Mexico in search of his CD which they found. Skip was responsible for the founding of the ECSCSD, of which I have enjoyed membership for many years.

Skip will be waiting at the "rainbow bridge" for Ace and many other of his furry friends."

From Jaime & Teresa Velasquez, "Skip holds a very special place in our hearts. He is the person who rescued our little Maggie out of a terrible house and brought her into our lives. At a Christmas party, Skip wore a tux (looking very dashing) and presented a special plaque to us. We were very touched. Special people like Skip, are very rare now days. We are so lucky to have known this very special man."

Linda Kenan shares the following, "One of my fondest memories of Skip was how he teased me every time I called the house. I would say, 'Hi Skip, this is Linda , how are you doing'? He would answer back with "Linda who? Sorry, I don't know anyone by that name, etc" Of course, it wasn't the same every time, but I took me a good five minutes of teasing before I got through to Barb. Even when I talked with him in the hospital, he teased about not knowing who I was. He was a little rough around the edges, but when you got past the edge, you found a very big heart."

Myrna Burleigh remembers, "Skip and his always "No" vote on spending money...his "motion to adjourn" after the minutes were read, his trash bag salad for the tailgates. Most of all, Myrna remembers Skip for his support and help that he gave the club over the past 28 years! And one other item. Skip would NEVER give me his recipe or what he called Skip's Surprise. I asked over and over for years. One evening at our meeting, Skip blurted out the recipe at a rapid fire rate. I fooled him, I got the complete recipe and brought it to the next meeting. Boy was he ever ticked! He got over it though. Just another Skipism."

Pam and Hazel share these thoughts, "Hazel (Mom) and I joined the club in the latter part of 1997 but didn't go to the meetings until January of 1998 and this is when we met both Skip and Barbara. To make a long story short--Skip will be missed immensely by us; we will miss his jokes, his sweet simple ways and most of all his presence at the meetings. We always found him to be both funny and pleasant to be around. He was truly a great friend to know and we will treasure those memories and his friendship. May the shamrocks falls softly Skip. Hey, don't forget to meet my Dad "Robert James Allen" up there in the heavens--you and he can drink lots of coffee up there and just chat away about anything, even those plans for building a model railroad -- hhmmmmmmm I can just see it now Barb, can you??

Sue Mertens has the following memories, "I will always remember how when Skip and Barb wanted a Fire puppy, he insisted on helping me build her whelping box. He did a lot of work and really seeemed to enjoy it. We all had a great fun time. Also.. I remember his worker -bee presence at all our early Agility Club of San Diego training days, circa 1990.. We had very heavy and cumbersome equipment in those days and were not well organized at moving it. He was always there early and late with a smile and his sense of humor. Then he was the premier time keeper.sitting in his chair at the trials with a stopwatch. He always did this job and we knew he was accurate. From now on, whenever I glance at the electronic clock, I will think of Skip and the good ole days.

And finally, Valerie Wheeler sums up, "Now that it comes time to think of specifics - I'll be darned if I can think of anything. But - my lasting memory of Skip is that he never took anything too seriously - including himself - much like our beloved Irish Setters. He was always a breath of fresh air when things got tense and I will think of him when life gets too serious to be interesting and fun... Skip, we'll all miss you
